IRS Raises Slot Jackpot Reporting Threshold Beginning in 2026

The Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) announced an increase to the federal reporting threshold for slot machine jackpots, effective for the 2025 tax year and beyond.

Beginning January 2026, casino winnings from slot games will be subject to federal reporting starting at $2,000, an increase from the long standing $1,200 threshold that had been in place for nearly five decades. The IRS also confirmed that, for years after 2025, the reporting threshold will be adjusted annually to account for inflation.

While the federal threshold has increased, states must separately update their own tax reporting requirements, and the timing of those changes remains unclear. Casino players should continue to expect that applicable state taxes may still apply to gambling winnings.

The IRS also confirmed that the current limitation allowing only 90 percent of gambling losses to be deducted remains in effect, meaning some taxpayers may still owe taxes even if their overall gambling activity results in a net loss.

Gun Lake Casino Resort Provides $7.9 Million in Revenue Sharing

Gun Lake Casino Resort and the Gun Lake Tribe provided $7.9 million in revenue sharing payments to the state of Michigan and local organizations, as announced in December.

The payments were made pursuant to the tribe’s gaming revenue sharing agreement with the state. Of the total amount, $3.1 million was allocated to the state of Michigan and $4.8 million was distributed to a local revenue sharing board that supports surrounding communities.

Revenue sharing funds have historically supported local governments, educational entities, and other public organizations in areas near the casino. According to the tribe, these payments have been made consistently since the casino opened in 2011 and reflect ongoing contributions tied to the casino’s operations and expansion.
